Following direction from the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA), the Nursing and Allied Health Rural Locum Scheme (NAHRLS) will now offer back-fill support to health service organisations in rural and remote Australia to cover staff taking any form of short term leave.
The NAHRLS will now provide back-fill support for all forms of short term leave
During a recent meeting in early December DoHA announced plans to provide greater consistency across all locum programs. DoHA concluded the NAHRLS programme will extend its leave policy to include other forms of leave such as personal leave and annual leave.
The primary focus of the NAHRLS is still leave for CPD training and activities and any locum requests to cover other forms of leave will be assessed on a priority basis. Priority assessment will be based on the following criteria:
1. CPD training and activities
2. CPD training and activities combined with other professional development
3. Recreation leave
4. Sick leave
5. Bereavement leave
6. Paternity and maternity leave
A Request for Locum Support Prioritisation table will be uploaded on our website shortly and will detail our selection criteria for all locum support requests.
General Manager Mark Ellis says the new NAHRLS leave policy will provide greater relief to health service organisations that require back-fill support and ensures that there is no loss of continuity in service delivery to the community. “Changes to the NAHRLS leave policy will bring us closer in our aim to ‘close the gap’ and address some of the challenges and barriers that rural and remote health professional’s face when taking leave”.
Locum support for leave is covered up to 14 days and includes a daily fixed meal allowance and a daily incentive allowance for locums on placement. Health service organisations will benefit from this programme through subsidised locum fees. The NAHRLS covers all travel and accommodation costs, incentives and allowances and no fees or charges are applied for requesting locum support. The requesting organisation will only be required to pay for the hourly wage of the locum during placement.
