Nursing and Allied Health Rural Locum Scheme Announced

Aspen Medical has been selected by the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) to establish and manage the Nursing and Allied Health Rural Locum Scheme (NAHRLS).

The NAHRLS is part of the Australian Government’s National Health and Hospital Network Reform agenda.
The NAHRLS has been established to enable rural nurses, midwives and eligible allied health professionals, including dental health professionals, to take short-term leave from their positions in rural Australia in order to access Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Aspen Medical will recruit and support suitable health professionals as locums to assist in the continuing service delivery in these rural practices while the rural health professionals take leave for CPD.
Aspen Medical’s General Manager, Glenn Keys said “Rural health professionals often face barriers to accessing CPD and Aspen Medical is excited to be undertaking this unique opportunity to establish a best practice nursing and allied health locum service which will play an important role in workforce retention in rural areas.”
“I congratulate the Australian Government’s commitment to enhancing and supporting CPD access for those dedicated rural health professionals that might not otherwise have had the chance to undertake further training away from their place of employment.”
The Scheme will support the ongoing CPD requirements of health professionals under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme and other workforce regulatory organisations as well as encouraging workforce distribution and retention with the aim of enhancing rural and remote workforce capacity.
Mr Keys concluded by saying “Aspen Medical has the experience and a large presence in rural Australia so we understand the challenges of providing the high standards of service required to administer a scheme like this.”
